9 augusztus 2011 - Bombay, Madame Cama Road. And this is what the newest generation of double-deckers in Bombay looks like. DDs (British-made) were introduced in 1937. The one in the picture is around 10-12 years old - I remember the batch of full-length cab ones was more-or-less new 10 years ago. Each BEST bus has two destination blinds - one at the front in Marathi, one on the side in English. It\''s the same with depot signs and fleet numbers (English at the back). This is why BEST buses were my favourite tool to learn to read and write Hindi (same script). The DD buses are accessed via the rear like old-fashioned front-engined buses in the UK. Passengers are served by two conductors - one on the lower and one on the upper deck - they usually walk around the deck and hit the handrails with their ticket clippers to alert the passengers. Of course each bus is fitted with a conductor\''s rope - pulled once to signal a stop and two to allow the driver to leave. Over the last 10 years the number of DD buses has dropped, but there is stil a few dozen of them in Colaba, Backbay, Worli, and Kurla depots. The picture shows bus 4027 from Backbay depot on route 138 running between said depot and the magnificent Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station or - as we called it - the Station Formerly Known as VT (Victoria Terminus).
