21 március 2013 - Liberec - Tramway Depot: I just managed to catch a photo of this Tatra KT4D whilst it was in Liberec - it came here from Gera and left soon afterwards for Szeged in Hungary. A rather strange tram for Liberec to obtain, as they haven`t ever had any KT4s in their fleet (unless there was a plan to use similar trams to replace the remaining Tatra T2s on the Jablonec interurban?)

Ganz CS #37

24 április 2015 - Budapest, Mexikoi ut: The unusual metro cars of Budapest Line 1 can be seen in daylight only here beyond the underground section. This metro line opened in 1896 and has always needed special vehicles, because the tunnels are very small and close to the surface, hence these Ganz MFAV cars built as three-car sets in the 1970s.

23 április 2015 - Debrecen, tramway depot: Tucked away in one of the tramway sheds at the time of my visit was this Schlick Type L tram of 1913, which has an interesting past. It was originally #2944 and #2964 in the fleet of BKV Budapest and was then sold to a museum group in Amsterdam, Holland. In 2005 it was established that this group had no further use for it, so a group of local Hungarian enthusiasts were able to bring it back to Debrecen, when it has taken the number 260 and serves as a second museum tram.

23 április 2015 - Debrecen, tramway depot: This permanenty-connected pair of Schlick Type F cars date back to 1904 and were in Budapest until 1984, when they were brought here for the tramway centenary and have remained ever since, being used to offer rides to visiting groups.

23 április 2015 - Debrecen, tramway depot: One of the 1997-built series production of Ganz-Hunslet articulated trams which run in Debrecen. I have noticed several small detail differences between the appearance of these and the 1993 prototype, #500. Both Ganz (once the most important Hungarian tramway builder) and Hunslet (who built, amongst other things, the subway cars for the City of Glasgow) have now closed down.

23 április 2015 - Debrecen, tramway depot: The city of Debrecen has largely copied Budapest by purchasing various home-grown Ganz trams over the years, including a small batch of the modern Ganz-Hunslet KCSV6 model which was offered from the early 1990s. The company soon went out of business, however, leaving these trams as unique as the very last Ganz trams to be built. It must be hoped that the city has a good spare parts contract, if it is to keep them in service for many more years. #500 shown here was the first to be supplied, followed by others a few years later.

Siemens foldalatti subway car #11

23 április 2015 - Budapest, Varosliget: Several people commented on the amazing Budapest `fodalatti` subway car of the pioneer line of 1896, so here is another photo. It looks rather like the insect called a preying mantis, doesn`t it? Note the huge iron chassis bars, just like railway wagons built to carry huge loads in the centre of the vehicle, and the primitive Siemens bow current collector. Inside, it is built almost entirely of varnished wood.

Miscellaneous 2-axle tram #2

19 április 2015 - Budapest, Varosmajor: Although purists might argue that this has no place on TWB, the Budapest Cogwheel Railway is Line #60 of the tramway company and shares drivers with the other, more conventional routes in the city. It runs for about 3 miles into the hills of Buda along a track too steep for normal trams and has been in existence since 1874, when the vehicle pictured here was built by the Nikolaus Riggenbach company who first equipped the line. I think it might be the oldest vehicle ever seen on TWB? The brake-man does not have a very pleasant job. Note also the traverser, still in use here to join several tracks.

BHÉV MIV #40

22 április 2015 - Miskolc, tramway depot: Unlikely to run again, but with an interesting history, is the 5-window tram built circa 1910 for passenger service on the HEV interurban lines which still run to several parts of the city of Budapest. These distinctive green trains used to reach further into the city along street tracks, hence the need for conventional tramcars. The tram shown here later came to Miskolc and ran in normal service for many years with the fleet number 78, eventually becoming a works car #M40.

These E1-series trams have popped up all over the place as second-hand acquisitions, as Wiener Linien has cleared out hundreds of then to re-equip with a vast fleet of new ULF cars (and continues to do so).

These impressive new trams are a big step forward from the Bengali cars that used to run all the services in the city and seem to have been well received. Although a few cities in other countries have bought new Skodas, the company hasn`t achieved quite as many sales as they would like, Pesa winning much of the new tramcar business in the region.

Here is #611, one of several trams operated by an active enthusiast group in the city. It was built by the Schlick company in 1908 and survived in normal service until the 1960s.

24 április 2015 - Varosliget, Pest, Hungary: When Budapest opened its first subway line in 1897, it was only the third underground electric railway in the world. This is one of the original Siemens & Halske cars built for the opening - as you can see, it will never win any prizes for good looks! However, the line was a great success and these cars ran for many years. Even now, Line 1 needs special vehicles built to the very restricted size of tunnels. By the way - sorry if I have placed this photo in the wrong TWB section, but I couldn`t find where it should go :-)

20 április 2015 - Szeged, tramway depot: This tram has an amazing history. First built in 1897 (yes, 1897!) it served as Budapest #207 until 1938, when it was rebuilt as the prototype for Type F1A and renumbered #1506. In 1972 it was given an entirely new body and served as a works car until 1984, when it came to Szeged. Although it is obviously immortal, it doesn`t look as though it will ever run again.

20 április 2015 - Szeged, tramway depot: Not content with a Tatra KT4D to chop up and play with, the workshop staff here now have an old Bengali to play with. Presumably the plan is to turn this shell into a modern, low floor version of the old Bengali, which is now just a museum piece. When you look at how much progress has been made in building their low-floor Tatra (see my earlier photo today) you wonder if anything will ever come of the plan.

Tucked away in one of the Zuglo depot sheds are the remains of two 1940-built, Ganz Type T trams that were the forerunners of the famous UV Class that followed in huge numbers. The bogie T Types were known as “Stukas” because of the very distinctive whining noise they made on stopping, similar to the sound of German dive-bombers.

27 március 2011 - Budapest (HU) – depot/zajezdnia Zuglo. A chance meeting outside Zuglo depot – two Mukis are ‘topping and tailing’ two UV motor cars which are being moved to the depot. After the two UV trams were safely stored away, we were offered a very nice ride back to the central workshops in one of the Mukis – no seats, so just like strap-hanging on the London Underground.

This experimental, low-floor articulated tram was being built as a ‘mock-up’ with parts from older trams (I suspect this involved some of the Tatra B4 cars which came here from Dresden a while ago). However, I think the tramway company soon realised this project didn’t really make sense, so it was abandoned and new Pesa trams bought instead.

30 március 2011 - Szeged (HU) – depot/zajezdnia, Pulcz utca. This Skoda 15Tr articulated trolleybus was being worked on when we visited the Szeged tramway depot. Numbered #40 in the fleet of Ceske Budejovice in Czech Republic, this bus came here for renovation and then (as I was told) was to be sent on to Usti nad Labem, so it may not have actually operated here in Szeged.

30 március 2011 - Szeged (HU) - Boldogasszony sugarut. The Hungarian city of Szeged has both trams and trolleybuses and is well worth a visit. Here is a large archway on the road to the main railway station, which is also a monument of some sort. There are other fine buildings in the historic city centre. The tram is one of the last remaining, double-ended ‘Bengali’ type, which are just kept in reserve these days and aren’t needed for normal service.

This type doesn’t run in normal service anymore and the intermediate trailer cars have been completely withdrawn – something to do with licensing. UVs would normally run as motor+trailer+motor in the past and there are still quite a few around the system, lurking in various depots. Here is some kind of technical college with a MAV locomotive displayed outside.

At one time, trams went across the road in the background and in front of the station, but the tracks were cut back a few years ago to this little side street - probably because of traffic congestion.
