The company are in very bad financial situation since the takeover of the local bus network, so they try to cut on everything... They think that buses run cheaper than trolleys, I think this is the reason.
I think that's a bullshit, especially now, when fuel is so expensive!
Fuel is expensive, but still, fixed costs of operating two electric modes are high too, especially that both tram & trolleybus networks are relatively small. From the economical point of view (not a trolleybus fan one) I think it was a mistake to open the trolleybus system in the 80s, instead of extending the tram network.
But you have to maintain wires even if trolleys are not working during weekend.
But on weekends, when demand is lower, you can combine bus + trolley routes - and you need diesel buses for that rather than trolleybuses...
