27 március 2011 - Budapest (HU) - Jaszai Mari ter. Approaching the terminus of Line 2 in central Pest, just by the Margit bridge. The track connection beyond here into the lines on the bridge, taken away some years ago to improve traffic flow, has recently been replaced, although it isn’t used for trams in passenger service.

A highlight of this trip to Budapest was an enthusiast trip along this single-track, very rarely used non-passenger link between Lines 50 and 42 in Kispest. Our journey was specially timed to match this local passenger train call at Kispest station, as seen here.

27 március 2011 - Budapest – Vorosmarty utca. In the back streets of Pest there are still little streets like this, with single track, side-of-the-road tramways. The four-wheeled tram from Szentendre museum seems very much at home here, even though ex-Hanover cars are the usual fare.

28 március 2011 - Budapest (HU) – Orz Vezer Tere. BKV Budapest operates a number of these distinctive 4-wheeled tram locomotives from 1926-7, known as ‘Mukis’, used for a variety of works purposes including towing broken-down trams. Some are specially equipped for snow clearing. Most of their activities seem to be at night and they are therefore tucked away in depots during daylight hours. On 28 March, two Mukis suddenly appeared at Zuglo depot ‘topping and tailing’ two old UV trams being brought there for storage. An unusual Muki ride was soon arranged! Off we rode to the main tramway workshops at Orz Vezer Tere, where to our amazement two more Mukis were standing. All four Mukis were coupled together, and off they all went, probably to Ferencvaros depot – a FOUR CAR Muki train!

30 március 2011 - Szeged (HU) - Fonogyari ut vegallomas. A new triangle has been built at the end of Line 3, which means that these ‘Bengali’ double-ended trams are no longer needed here. Only a few now remain, and it seems they are likely to be withdrawn from service quite soon.

20 február 2010 - Alexandria (EG) – Muharram Bey. The Ganz cars are confined to a line in the outer suburbs of Alexandria, so aren’t seen in the city centre. This is another chaotic market area where the trams nose along through the stalls and street traders.

20 február 2010 - Alexandria (EG) – depot/zajezdnia Muharram Bey. Some pictures today for our Hungarian friends. The thirty attractive Ganz/Düwag trams are the newest in the Alexandria city fleet (although now twenty-five years old). They’ve worn very well, still look quite modern and are smooth and comfortable to ride in. I don’t know of any others built to this design – presumably this was a special order, just for Alexandria? Cars 1203+1204 stand in the small Muharram Bey depot.

The newest trams on the Alexandria city lines are thirty of these attractive Hungarian Ganz cars, with bogies by Düwag, which run in back-to-back coupled pairs. These trams are normally seen only on lines in the southern suburbs and not in the city centre.

4 október 2008 - Timisoara (RO) – depou/zajezdnia Dambovita. I was just too late to see the old German and Swiss trolleybuses working here, as all were replaced in early 2008. Many, like this ex-Weimar Ikarus, were just put to one side in the depot – now they have all gone for scrap, I hear.

27 szeptember 2009 - Budapest (HU) – Szentendre. This strange little machine was built for Miskolc tramways in 1953 – it looks homemade (and probably was). It looks just like the shed in my garden! The tram was brought here in 1999 and is just one of several from the city that have found a new home at Szentendre museum. No shortage of windscreen wipers…….

27 szeptember 2009 - Budapest (HU) – Szentendre. Another technical tram at Szentendre museum. This 1913 Ganz car is believed to be the only remaining tram from the city of Pecs, where trams ran until the early 1960s. After the system closed, it was rebuilt as a ‘Sinhalozatmero’ or electric power measurement car, for use on the HEV lines around Budapest. Although it carries a pantograph, it’s an unpowered trailer.

27 szeptember 2009 - Budapest (HU) – Szentendre. This was once a wooden-bodied ‘Muki’ goods tram of the Budapest city tramways. In 1958 it was given a smart new look with a steel body and converted to a ‘Sincsiszolo’ car (which I think is a track grinder or scrubber car). It now lives in the Szentendre museum with other BKV and HEV equipment.

Hidden away behind the HEV suburban railway depot is an amazing sight – a huge collection of over sixty old trams and electric railway vehicles, dating back many years. They are nearly all in very bad condition, though. The HEV seem never to have scrapped anything! This is a very early wooden city tram – I think it’s a Type D of 1897 with ‘Dresden’ axles – a total wreck, but useful for spare parts and patterns, I expect.

27 szeptember 2009 - Budapest (HU) – Szentendre. Now housed in the BKV Transport Museum, the Hungaroplan prototype is unique. Built as a design experiment in the BKV works, parts were taken from a Ganz CSMG2 car, from Ikarus buses and even from cars of the period. It worked in service until 2007 but is now withdrawn and seems unlikely to run again.

26 szeptember 2009 - Budapest (HU) – Kelenvolgy (I think). One of the BKV museum cars on a test run for last Sunday’s special operation. In fact, it broke down on Sunday and couldn’t take part, so I was lucky to get some pictures and a ride (like me, it doesn’t get out much……). This tram was rebuilt to look like a UV in the 1950s, but was eventually rebuilt again to its original design.

1941 - Budapest. This very strange vehicle is pictured in the Szentendre bus and tram museum and I thought you would like to see it. It’s a petrol-engined coach converted into a tram - amazing! I know nothing about it or where it ran, although perhaps it was a war-time conversion. It now exists only in this photograph (photographer unknown).
